STC's Passenger Security Enhancements

For decades, Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC) drivers have had a well deserved reputation for safe, reliable and courteous passenger services. Effective December 1, 2008, STC will start to equip its drivers with better tools to enhance overall passenger safety throughout Saskatchewan.

Passengers have long relied on the professionalism of STC drivers to ensure their safety. Whether it is providing safe passage through difficult road conditions, prohibiting items not permitted into the passenger compartment, or handling unusual situations, STC drivers have had an impeccable safety record.

"Today, I am pleased to announce several important measures that will strengthen STC's and its drivers' ability to ensure the security of passengers," Minister of Crown Corporations Ken Cheveldayoff said. "To better protect passengers and drivers, the Company is implementing explicit conditions for carriage and a number of new security measures."

Passengers riding with STC will be encouraged to keep carry-on baggage to a minimum and to stow most luggage in the lower baggage compartment. Drivers will have the explicit authority to restrict carry-on baggage and to inspect passengers and their carry-on baggage at their discretion. Existing security personnel at STC's busiest terminals will be available to assist drivers with boarding inspections as required.

In addition, a number of new security measures will be implemented including:

  • All buses will be equipped with interior and exterior cameras;
  • Improved corridor lighting and larger rear-view mirrors for improved visibility of passenger compartments;
  • Larger plexi-glass shield will be installed to physically protect drivers and allow them time to address emergencies; and
  • Global positioning devices with emergency alert capability will be placed on all buses. With the push of a button, the police or other assistance can be dispatched to the precise location of the bus.

For the protection of passengers and the integrity of STC's security procedures, the Company will not be releasing all of its existing and future security measures.
